You Can Invest 5 Minutes Learning How to Get Your License… Or Spend The Next Year Wishing You Had!

The Days of Simple Licensing Are Over!
Up until the 1990’s Reciprocity
between state medical boards made it relatively easy to get a state medical license.

  • Simple and streamlined processes
  • Holding a license in one state made it relatively easy to get a license in another state
  • Minimal paperwork
  • Minimal primary source verification required
  • Fast processing
  • Low technology
  • Minimal Involvement required by the physician
  • Could complete a process with a few hours of effort and licenses where issued within a few weeks

The New Rules of Medical Licensing

Getting a license today
It is the primary mission of the Boards to protect the public by licensing physicians who demonstrate not only clinical competence to practice medicine, but the requisite professional and ethical demeanor necessary to lead the modern health care delivery team. To that end state boards have now developed application procedures which are very thorough so that they can maintain confidence that their licensees will benefit the community in which they practice. Balancing the states dramatic need for physicians, with the public mandate of quality and professional excellence, Boards have worked tirelessly to modernize the application process.  What Does This Mean For You?

  • Individual state eligibility requirements.  Holding a license in one state no longer means you can get a license in another state. In fact, some states will make you take an $800, four-hundred question general medicine exam if you don’t meet specific eligibility minimums.
  • Detailed and lengthy applications and forms. Usually you’ll spend 6-8 hours running around gathering information and trying to get all the paperwork done, worrying about time consuming letter writing, trying to find time to wade through the state requirements, laws &  rules and complete applications & forms.
  • Extensive phoning and follow-up. The verification process is detailed and will leave you completing forms to verify your education, training, work history and credentials.  To get the job done right you will need to spend an inordinate amount of your business day making research and
    follow-up phone calls.
  • The FCVS was created as a resource to assist with the credentials verification process, however, it is not required by most boards and can cost you an extra $450, double the paperwork and delay your license by three months.  Before you apply for an FCVS profile, you must know what it does…and what it leaves you doing.
  • Increased credentials verification is required and must be completed every time you apply for a license.  Additional exams, CME and fingerprint background processes have also been added.
  • Long review timelines.  In most states it takes 4 months to get a license.  In states like Texas, Florida, California, New Jersey and half-a-dozen other states the average license can take 6 months or longer.  It is critical that you understand the state process and estimated timeline so you can apply at the right time and avoid jeopardizing your position.
  • The days of sending in an application and fee and then calling the board are over.  Board staff cannot process your application until they have all required verifications.  The Boards leave it up to you to ensure that all documents are submitted and that all 3rd party verifications are completed properly.  Processing of your application is delayed until all items are received.

In summary, this new process of obtaining a state medical license has become laborious, time consuming and lengthy and is a true test of ones patience and persistence.  Getting a medical license now demands that you devote a minimum of 8-10 hours to research, paperwork, and tedious letter writing.  Not to mention the hair-pulling frustration of dealing with the bureaucracy of record keeping, preservation and credentials verification.  It involves filling out detailed and lengthy forms that need to be sent out to different institutions and have to be followed up with phone calls to administrative staff that are often overburdened with other issues.
